third Part of this study, I would like to discuss the forgiveness of sins with you with an opening statement that might shock you:

You cannot ask for forgiveness of sins!

I know I have done it many times in my ministry and hear other preachers also proclaiming to people that they have to ask for forgiveness of their sins. But, if there is no such scripture to support this practice, then it might be unbiblical?

Let’s examine the Word of God to see the truth on the matter. In the book of Acts the following scripture says that God has exalted Jesus Christ to be a Savior, for to give repentance and forgiveness of sins:

Act 5:31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

That means the moment when you repent and confess your sins, you receive the forgiveness.

In Acts 26:15 – 18 Saul (later Paul) had his encounter with Jesus and in verse 18 Jesus says the following:

Act 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Then in both the following verses, Paul makes another statement that we have the forgiveness of sins already:

Eph 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Col 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

This word “have” is from the Greek word “echo” which is a primary verb, meaning “to hold” in the following applications:

As in possession;

As in ability

Or as in relation or a condition.

So, in summary of these verses, we see that repentance and forgiveness of sins is given, on the one hand and then Paul says we already have it in possession. There is no scripture where you can or have to ask for forgiveness of sins.

Jesus said in the book of John, that no one can come to Him unless the Father draws him.

Joh 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him to life on the last day.

In other words, you will not even be able to achieve this through your own decision or performance. It is through the love of God that you are drawn to Jesus and then you receive the forgiveness of all your sins through His Grace – past, present and future:

Rom 3:24 By his grace they are justified freely through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Rom 8:1-2 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in union with Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.

The fact that all our sins (past, present and future) have already been dealt with by the blood of Jesus on the very same day when He was crucified, is maybe a bit mind blowing but bear with me in this regard as I will discuss this point further.

Maybe you are thinking now:

How is it possible that Jesus has already provided the forgiveness of my sins which I have not done yet?

How can I accept this type of reasoning?

Well, the answer is quite straight forward:

Jesus died and provided the forgiveness of all your sins (past, present and future) before you were even born and long before you have done all those terrible things in your past.

So why is it then so difficult to believe that even your future sins have already been forgiven – you just have to accept and acknowledge the fact. But remember:

This does not give us carte blanche to go and sin and live according to the ways of the world!

But it does mean we should stop living in a self-destruction and self-condemnation manner. Jesus loves you and He died for you because of His love for you.

Start rejoicing and truly LIVE in His grace by being free from all sin and anxiety.
